A note from founder, Polina Smith:

Why I’m Passionate about Exercise:

I was inspired to start My WholeBody after I saw my own life profoundly change through exercise. As a teenager and young adult, I spent a lot of time crash dieting, waning through cycles of food deprivation to binge eating and back again. Consequently, my weight, energy, and moods continuously went up and down as I increasingly lost control of my appetite and health. One day, after having felt fatigued and depressed for months, I had a strong impulse to go for a run (I hadn’t run in years!). As I ran, I felt a cloud lift. I felt energized, invigorated, and joy for the first time in months. The next day I went for a run again, and felt the same high. Soon after, I was running every day feeling better than I had felt in years. People commented how much happier I seemed, how great I looked, and I gained the confidence to take on projects and meet people I had never thought possible. In short, 45 minutes of exercise a day completely transformed my life. Since then, exercise has remained a central component of my life, as it is a main source of profound joy, peace and well-being!

Why I’m Passionate about Holistic Health:

In my early twenties, I developed chronic nausea, feeling sick every day for two years. I went from doctor to doctor, from blood test, to gastroscopies and ultra sounds, all coming back with the same answer, “Everything looks fine. If you want, you can take these pills to help mask the symptoms…” Disillusioned with Allopathic Medicine, I turned to alternative therapies, and eventually found an incredible Chinese Medicine doctor named Ethan Murchie in Montreal. Ethan approached the body unlike anyway I had ever experienced before, addressing it on physical, emotional, nutritional, psychological and spiritual levels. Within six sessions, my nausea was gone. Through Ethan, I learned to appreciate the body as a sacred, intricate temple, rather than as a rigid machine. Since, I have become a strong advocate for holistic health, with the hope that all who struggle with health conditions will find a nurturing, loving path through which they too find their full vitality and well-being!

A first draft of  a piece I’m working on for the Medea Project’s Performance for Planned Parenthood in June…

If I could whisper tenderly to your womb,

and ask her to reveal her deepest secrets,

what would she share?

What pleas would come out unapologetically?

Would she speak of the synthetic hormones, elevated prostegeron and estrogen levels that make her insides churn? Would she share her grandmother’s memories of DES   that left the next generation unable to have children of their own? Would she ask if you remembered Delilah, your mother’s friend, born with the truncated arms because of the oral contraceptives the doctored had advocated so many years ago?

Would she ask, “Do you think it’s really that different now?”

The pharmaceutical companies prophesying that  little orange pills or nuva rings, or IUD devices with just  ‘slight’ amounts of hormones added– will save the day—

Is this what sexual liberation looks like? Is this what reproductive rights have come to mean?

If so, I want a new Revolution.

And yes, I think women should have a choice.

And Yes, I think a panel of men deciding what choices women should have over their own reproductive rights, is fundamentally fucked up,

But television commercials blasting advertisements of pills miraculously making PMS, acne, babies go away, Cosmo flashing colorful tag lines of “Let Freedom Ring” and  doctors dispensing oral contraceptives and hormonal therapy, like it was candy, is not what choice means to me.

Does the next generation of mothers even know what natural forms of birth control look like?

When are our girls ever taught that the beautiful complexity of the female body gives clear signals of fertility without the words, “it’s unreliable, unsafe, can’t be trusted…” used in the same sentence?

To me, this is the true, if even unconsciously waged, war on women–The dispensing, the advocating, the prophesying that our own innate wisdom can’t be trusted

That we are ‘unsafe,’ ‘not fully functioning’ ‘lacking freedom,’ unless we chose to drug ourselves

Instead of learning to tune in.

My may daughter know freedom

And may she know it, regardless of what the government decides.
